Simplified computing
by bruno
After playing again on friday with a friend’s iPad for 20 minutes I started thinking about simplified computing. Sure I love my command line, matlab, perl, python, you name it. But I also love to pick something up and not have to figure out stuff I don’t want to. I want to be productive. Quickly.
As a full blown computer nerd, it’s not easy. It’s a paradigm shift. I used Gentoo at a point for byte’s sake. Maybe I’m getting old. Maybe I’m getting smarter.

The thing is that it's not an either/or thing. It's kind of like cameras: some people just want a point-and-shoot that will do everything for them. Others will want a digital SLR where everything is done manually.
Both approaches are valid. And while camera makers probably sell way more point-and-shoot cameras, there will always be some people who want to do everything themselves.
Hi Ian,
You're right but if you keep going with the analogy, what's happening nowadays is that people have both cameras. They have a serious, heavy, not as straightforward to use bulky DSLR and a simpler point-n-shoot they carry everywhere.
And the truth is that most point-n-shoot can take amazing pictures and in most situations, a DSLR is overkill or a niche need (more dynamic range, less noisy, etc).
Indeed – and I don't expect that anyone will *just* have an iPad. After all, you need to activate it with a PC or Mac! :)
