The new Sony cameras NEX3 and NEX5 were released a couple of days ago. They’re Sony’s response to the micro 4/3 format spearheaded by Panasonic and Olympus. While the micro 4/3 format’s sensor is approximately 50% the size of a full 35mm sensor, Sony is using an APS-C size sensor in the new cameras. Below is a picture that shows you how it relates to the traditional 35mm film cameras.

Sensor size

Ever since they came out, people have gone crazy and either claimed Sony’s new format (E-mount, 18mm distance to sensor) is doomed or that micro 4/3 format (20mm distance to sensor) is doomed. All this based on a couple of sites that put some pictures up comparing cameras at different ISOs. All of this to the delight of the pixel peeping fanatics.

I think most of them are missing the point. Photography is not about capturing with the best possibly technical quality every moment. It is, first and foremost about about capturing those moments. While having fun. Yes, Photography is about having fun. That is what is going to make you pick up your camera, go out and take shots.

What I’ve really enjoyed seeing is people going back to their old lenses. They had been probably attached to their film cameras for 10 or more years now. With some adapters, all vintage lens – superb and mediocre – can now be used on the micro 4/3 format. Soon, they will also be on the NEX.

I for one am loving that Sony has now a new pair of cameras that with the right adapters can get people to use their old lenses. I am even more thrilled that this will make people not use auto-focus. They will have to devote themselves more to the shot, further pushing the boundaries of their creativity. Photography will be more fun!
